The Mayra Basket, handwoven of pine needles and pajon, a native grass of the Guatemalan highlands, features a central pinwheel design and gracefully curved handles. Its versatile size and shape make it a perfect fruit or bread basket or a handy receptacle to organize projects and mail. Handmade and fair trade.
- Pine needles, pajon (wild grass) and raffia
- 9" diameter base, 10.5" top excluding handles, 14" including handles, 2.75" high, includes a small loop on back if you want to hang it on the wall.
This basket is named for the young daughter of a Mayan Hands basket maker. Mayra stayed with her mother as she worked on the design and was thrilled with the completed basket. Her mom's income through fair trade means Mayra will have the opportunity to attend school, something her mother was not able to do as a girl.
THE STORY: Mayan Hands is a fair trade nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering Mayan women in their quest to bring their families out of extreme poverty as they continue to live within the culture they cherish. When provided economic opportunity and income, over time women can build sustainable futures for themselves, their families and communities.
